Grab a unique Australian brooch and support endangered species recovery.
This highly attractive finch species is somewhat emblematic of the classic northern Australian grassy woodland. This mobile species is a seed eater relying on relatively few species to persist. It naturally comes in three different head colours, black (over 70%, red (30%) and yellow (roughly 1 in 1000). Because of these variations and their striking colours they were once a significant target for aviculture harvesting heavily impacting populations. Now, despite a ban on harvesting from the wild, this species is deemed not to have recovered adequately with altered fire regimes and over-grazing of grassy habitat largely identified as a key driver.
Each piece in our rare species range is delicately hand painted on a timber base and carries its own unique characteristics. Due to this some minor variations from the pictured product are to be expected.
5% of all net earnings related to the rare species range will be donated to threatened species recovery programs. Sign up to the mailing list to track donations.
Hinged pin backing, iron (nickel free).
Each piece from the endangered species range is designed by me (Nat) on Adobe Illustrator following a sketching session on my iPad.
From there I laser cut it on my handy at home machine on to a piece of timber, then hand sand each side for a smooth finish.
Each piece is then hand painted with premium acrylic paint and varnished on both sides. Lastly they are secured to their respective fittings with super strong jewellery specific glue or attached to high quality metal fittings.
