Supporting a cause

Grab a unique Australian brooch and support endangered species recovery.

This nationally vulnerable species is from a family of birds known as megapodes. All megapodes utilise mounds of soil and composting matter to maintain nest temperatures. Hatchlings from these species grow to a much more advanced stage inside the egg than most bird species and, because of this, are forced to fend for themselves from the time they hatch. Unlike other megapodes, which live in very wet environments, much of the Malleefowls range exists in semi-arid environments, where they use a combination of decomposing litter and the heat from the sun to warm the nest. Habitat clearance has been a principle driver of this species decline, with climate change and predation likely contributing to ongoing declines in places.  However, there are part of this species range where populations appear somewhat stable.

Each piece in our rare species range is delicately hand painted on a timber base and carries its own unique characteristics. Due to this some minor variations from the pictured product are to be expected.

5% of all net earnings related to the rare species range will be donated to threatened species recovery programs. Sign up to the mailing list to track donations.

APPROXIMATE DIMENSIONS:

Height: 5cm

Width: 6.5cm

Please refer to our colour and handmade disclaimer in our footer as well as the care instructions in our FAQ section.

Hinged pin backing, iron (nickel free).

Each piece from the endangered species range is designed by me (Nat) on Adobe Illustrator following a sketching session on my iPad.

From there I laser cut it on my handy at home machine on to a piece of timber, then hand sand each side for a smooth finish.

Each piece is then hand painted with premium acrylic paint and varnished on both sides. Lastly they are secured to their respective fittings with super strong jewellery specific glue or attached to high quality metal fittings.

Although designs are laser cut and we do our best to quality control all items listed on our website, chips, scratches, burn marks, variations in material, colour and finish as well as imperfections can occur.
